We were awed and humbled by the number, enthusiasm and creativity of the entries. Some people rapped their thesis, others used sound effects, all are awesome. THANK YOU to everyone who submitted.

Ph.Detours – Today we are rolling out a new video feature called “Ph.Detours”!

It was supposed to debut on August 24, but because the Mars Rover is landing August 5 we decided to air this one now. “Detours” is our attempt at creating live content that is fun, engaging and informative (as you know, we feel everyone else is dropping the ball). It’s being created by me (Jorge), produced by Matt Siegler (a Postdoc at JPL) and hosted by Alex Lockwood, a Ph.D. student in Planetary Science at Caltech (you might know her as one of the stars of The PHD Movie).

We’re very excited and hope you like it. It’s the first of several new things coming to the website, all of it made possible by your support (it’s all commercial free, no ads!). So, please help us spread the word!

Subtitles! – The PHD Movie now has English, Spanish, French, German, Chinese (simplified and traditional), Greek, Russian, Japanese, and Czech subtitles!

Thanks to all the folks who translated. You can get the movie here (select the download option to get the subtitles packet).

Higgs Boson – To download the full Higgs Boson animation for your classroom, outreach project or personal use, just visit this page: http://vimeo.com/41038445 and look for the download link in the lower left of the page.

You might also be interested in Daniel and Jorge’s previous animation: Dark Matters.

Endeavor College Prep – 5% of profits from the movie will go to benefit this school (Jorge Cham was a founding board member):

10 Days to Go! – Here is a two-minute version of the “Making Of The PHD Movie”. Enjoy!

Art vs. Science – The countdown continues… This is a fun interview done by Robin Ince, a well-known comedian from the UK famous for his work with Ricky Gervais and for the “Infinite Monkey Cage” podcast he does with Physicist Brian Cox. Listen in while you work as we chat about making science look fun, art vs. science and how society views academia.

Soundtrack – The first bonus in the countdown to the PHD Movie release is the PHD Soundtrack. Click below to listen in:

You can also watch this video excerpt from the “Making Of” special feature in the DVD that focuses on the movie’s musicians:

I’m really proud of the work that Music Director Melanie Guittet did in putting the soundtrack together for the PHD Movie. Not only was she a grad student in Nanotechnology (!) at the time, but she managed to find great musicians and bands in and around campus to contribute and she worked with them to fit the music to the movie. The movie would not be nearly as impactful or soulful without such rocking music. Thanks also to composer Eric Santiestevan (who once upon a time worked as a lab manager) and everyone who contributed.

The Times of New York – PHD was featured in Sunday’s NY Times.
